Lucky Dog

Getting started

Install Lucky Dog and add your first holdings

Install

Download the installer for your system from the latest release:

SystemFile
macOS (Apple silicon)lucky-dog-<version>-mac-arm64.dmg
macOS (Intel)lucky-dog-<version>-mac-x64.dmg
Windowslucky-dog-<version>-win-x64.exe
Linux.AppImage or .deb

The app checks for updates itself and offers to install a new version when one is out.

The first opening on macOS

Lucky Dog isn't notarized by Apple yet, so the first time you open a downloaded copy, macOS says it can't verify that the app is free of malware. To open it anyway:

  1. Click Done - not Move to Trash.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll to the bottom. Next to the note that Lucky Dog was blocked, click Open Anyway.
  3. Confirm with your password. From then on it opens like any other app.

Versions before 0.0.34 may instead say the app is damaged. Download the latest version, or run this in Terminal once the app is in Applications:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Lucky Dog.app"

Free, or with a licence

Lucky Dog is free to use. The first time it opens it asks for your email address and lets you straight in; tick the box if you'd like an email about new versions. Until you have a licence, it reminds you to buy one about once a month.

A licence ends the reminders. Enter it in Settings → Advanced → About → Licence (or from the welcome screen, or the reminder itself), either:

  • paste the licence you received, or
  • switch to Redeem code and enter the code you bought with your email address. The licence is made on the website, activated straight away and mailed to you as well. You can also redeem a code on the redeem page.

A licence covers a whole major version and is checked on your computer; nothing is sent anywhere.

Add what you hold

  1. Open Assets → Holdings and add a position: search by name or code (SH600519, HK00700, USAAPL, a six-digit fund code), then enter shares and cost. You can also import a CSV or JSON file.
  2. Quotes sync every 15 minutes while the window is in front; change the interval under Settings → General.
  3. Add cash under Assets if you want total assets and allocation to include it.

Codes follow one convention throughout the app: SH / SZ / BJ for A-shares, HK for Hong Kong, US for US stocks, and a bare six-digit code for an off-exchange fund.

Write down the plan

Open a holding to see its dossier, then Edit plan. The five required parts are when you would add, your target weight, how you buy, how you sell, and what would prove you wrong. Everything you write afterwards goes on the timeline below the plan and is never overwritten.

Optional

  • Watchlist: add names you are waiting on, with a price or event trigger.
  • Crypto: add an OKX or Binance account with a read-only API key, or a manual wallet.
  • AI assistant: pick a model provider and add its API key under Settings → AI model.
  • Network proxy: if quotes or the assistant can't connect, set a proxy under Settings → Advanced → Network proxy - follow the system's (the default), none, or your own address - and check it with Test connection.
  • AI clients: connect Claude or another MCP client - see AI and MCP.
